ALAN GERSON CAUGHT LYING ABOUT MALONEY ENDORSEMENT

Numerous other endorsements falsified. Incumbent City Councilmember Alan Gerson has been lying about his endorsements. The Gerson campaign has been promoting the popular Congresswoman's endorsement on his website, in mailings and in advertisements. The only problem is Maloney has not endorsed Gerson. In fact, she asked Mr. Gerson to remove the endorsement from his website as soon as she learned of it - which Gerson has not yet done.

Indeed, a number of people cited as endorsing Gerson in an ad published in this week's Downtown Express deny endorsing Gerson.

Pete Gleason, the progressive Democrat challenging Gerson in Tuesday's Democratic Primary, was not surprised. "Alan Gerson's dysfunctional and dishonest campaign is a perfect mirror of his disastrous tenure at City Hall. Downtowners deserve fresh, honest and transparent leadership."

Gerson's campaign has been dogged by legal troubles and shoddy execution. Today, the Campaign Finance Board denied Gerson matching funds - leaving the eight-year incumbent with no funds and over $50,000 in loans that must be repaid by Tuesday. Last month the Daily News reported that Gerson had been illegally using taxpayer-funded non-profits to perform political work.

In addition to Congresswoman Maloney, Gerson falsely claimed other endorsements in the ad, including:
  • Art Kriemelman, President of the SoHo Alliance (who has endorsed Pete Gleason)
  • Brad Hoylman, Former Community Board 2 Chair
  • Caroline Stone
  • Thomas Goodkind
Caroline Stone Keating, a SoHo resident, said "I am furious at Alan Gerson for using my name without permission. I have not endorsed Alan, and will not do so."

One supporter that Gerson failed to list was WTC developer Larry Silverstein. Silverstein, who contributed $250 to the embattled incumbent, was left off the list - perhaps due to concerns over the obvious conflict of interest involved with Gerson's chairmanship of the Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Committee.

Paul Newell, Gleason's communications director said, "It's sad, really. Gerson has lost so much support in our community over the past eight years that he's been reduced to making things up. On Tuesday, Downtowners can elect a real leader - Pete Gleason."
