GERSONGATE: 10 QUESTIONS FOR ALAN J. GERSON
In light of recent revelations that Alan Gerson's petitions were altered after circulation and that a non-profit organization receiving slush funds from Gerson's office was involved in the process, many questions remain unanswered.
In the interest of a fair, transparent elections process, Pete Gleason, a Civil Rights Attorney running for City Council in Lower Manhattan 's first council district, demands answers from Councilmember Alan J. Gerson to the following questions.
- Does Councilmember Gerson's office have a policy regarding political involvement with non-profit organizations his office supports?
- Does Councilmember Gerson feel that United Jewish Council of the East Side (UJCES)'s strategy of political involvement is proper for a non-profit?
- Who is Councilmember Gerson's contact at UJCES?
- Who was involved in the decision to allocate slush fund money to the organization?
- Is Councilmember Gerson aware that David Weinberger, District Leader for the Truman Democratic Club, is on UJCES' payroll, and was he aware of this when he allocated slush funds to the organization?
- Does Councilmember Gerson know who at the Truman Democratic Club bound and submitted his petitions?
- Does Councilmember Gerson know how Renee Abramowitz's initials cam to be on a document that she has testified she did not initial?
- What is Councilmember Gerson's relationship with attorney Dudley Gaffin, and how is Mr. Gaffin compensated for amending cover sheets on his behalf?
- Does Councilmember Gerson know UJC Home Care Director, Howard Fried, and when did he learn that Fried encouraged employees to campaign on behalf of Gerson?
- Does Councilmember Gerson now think his 2003 lawsuit to deny Pete Gleason access to the ballot was unfair and inappropriate? If so, why has he changed his mind?
